Investigations
Fort Stanwix,Rome New York

History:
For thousands of years the ancient trail that connects the Mohawk River and Wood Creek served as a vital link for people traveling between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Ontario. Travelers used this well-worn route through Oneida Indian territory to carry trade goods and news, as well as diseases, to others far away. When Europeans arrived they called this trail the Oneida Carrying Place and inaugurated a significant period in American history--a period when nations fought for control of not only the Oneida Carrying Place, but the Mohawk Valley, the homelands of the Six Nations Confederacy, and the rich resources of North America as well. In this struggle Fort Stanwix would play a vital role.
Known as "the fort that never surrendered," Fort Stanwix, under the command of Col. Peter Gansevoort, successfully repelled in August 1777 a prolonged siege by British, German, Loyalist, Canadian and American Indian troops and warriors commanded British Gen. Barry St. Leger. The repulsed siege combined with the battles at Oriskany, Bennington, and Saratoga thwarted a coordinated effort by the British, under the leadership of Gen. John Burgoyne, to take the northern colonies, and led to American alliances with France and the Netherlands. Troops from Fort Stanwix also participated in the 1779 Clinton-Sullivan Campaign and protected America's northwest frontier from British campaigns until 1781. Report: Many soldiers in period dress have been sighted in various places through out the fort. Around sunrise you can sometimes hear drums and fifes, a lady crying for her sick child can be heard also. A one legged man has also been spotted by employees as well as tourists sitting in one of the barracks. At all hours of the day and night you can hear footsteps, voices, sounds of someone sweeping a floor, chopping wood, and such antics as lights going on and off by themselves, doorknobs turning, and the security alarm system being tripped. Investigation: while at the fort we did not expirence anything paranormal but it was 10 degrees cooler inside the fort. We got no EVPs. On the video camera we left in in the bomb shelter and cought unexplained noises. We are still woundering why we picked the noises up with the video camera and not on the voice recorder.

The Stanley Theatre,Utica New York

History: The Stanley Theatre opened September 10, 1928 and has been the premier showplace for Central New York ever since.
Thomas Lamb, a prolific theatre architect, designed this 2,945 seat movie palace for the Mastbaum chain of theaters. The theatre was named for Stanley, one of the Mastbaum brothers.
The design of the theatre is dubbed "Mexican baroque" because of its unique blend of styles. The terra cotta and tiled mosaic exterior shows the Mexican influence, while Hapsburg lions, Indian faces, and a multitude of angels and putti (cherubs) grace the lavish baroque "gold leaf" interior of the theatre. The Moorish influence is apparent in the star-splashed ceiling and the twisted columns on each side of the stage. There is even an art-deco look to some of the drapery treatments in the organ lofts.
The Central New York Community Arts Council, Inc. purchased the Stanley in 1974. As of 2004, over $ 5 million has been spent to date on its brilliant restoration.
Since its purchase, CNYCAC has upgraded all mechanical, electrical, and safety systems and is continuing to provide technical improvements to accommodate the many touring shows and artists that appear at the Stanley.
The seats have been restored and most of the interior has been refinished to its original condition. New carpeting has been installed that replicates the original pattern.
There are four major local presenters that use the Stanley: the Broadway Theatre League which brings in touring Broadway shows; the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute Great Artists Series which features the best in opera, recital artists, and dance companies; the Utica Symphony Orchestra; and the Mohawk Valley Ballet.
Recent events at the Stanley include the National Tour of Blues Clues Live, The Full Monty, Itzhak Perlman, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, The Spirit of the Dance, B.B. King, Jerry Seinfeld, Cats, The Canadian Brass, Stomp, and Sir James Galway.
The elegant Stanley lobbies are the site for many receptions and meetings throughout the year. It has also become a local tradition for wedding parties to have their photographs taken on the grand staircases in the lobby. (Legend has it that one staircase was designed to resemble the grand staircase on the Titanic ocean liner).
Report: There is a seat that they do not sell the ticket for, nor will they tell you what seat it is. Many people who have sat in the seat have felt someone sit on them, or try to force them out of the seat.
Investigation: While at the Stanley we noticed that the air was heavier on the second belcony in the last row of seats. This is where the seat is located. We do not know what seat is haunted. We cought no EVPs but cought a face on a orb in a picture, and also we cought a out line of a man on stage.

The ghost of a little girl, who was burnt to death in a house that once stood here, now haunts the hotel built over the buried ashes of her former home. Guests, maids, managers, and bellboys have all witnessed Tanya's playful spirit here. People usually report her jumping on beds in empty rooms or running through the halls at night. She supposedly lives in room 422 and likes to listen to the stereo music and make long distant phone calls.
Investigation: While at the hotel we felt light headed right when we walked in. We stayed in room 422. We set the alarm clock for 2:00 in the morning so we can investigate. We were awoken by the alarm but when we turned it off the clock said 5:00. This was the only thing we expirenced. We cought alot of orbs in are photos. We left the video camera on all night. When we looked at the tape we saw something round flying past the camera. Also the video camera looks to move a couple times. We also left the voice recorder on all night but cought nothing.

Rolling Hills Sanitorium, East Bethany New York

*On this Investigation Matthew Dwyer the founder of the Utica Paranormal Society, got a chance to investigate with T.A.P.S. from scifis Ghost Hunters during a retreat that was held by darkness radio.
History:
Back in 1824, the state capital of New York decreed that the counties of NY were now responsible for their poor. It was no longer the responsibility of the individual towns. In 1826, the county of Genesee purchased a property in the town of Bethany that was a former stage coach tavern and inn. They opened their doors in January, 1827, and began using the site to house the poor. They took in anyone who could not fend for themselves. They housed paupers, transients, orphans, widows, the elderly and those who were insane, idiotic, and the very ill.By the very late 1800's, the Board of Supervisors decided not to keep the insane here any longer. They were to be sent to Buffalo or Willard's Insane Asylums. Only under a "temporary" basis were the insane to be kept here for observation. Some were "temporarily" kept here at the county home for years. By the mid 1950's, the home was mostly a county nursing home for the very old. At that time, the only children here were the offspring of the employees who lived and worked here. In 1974 residents were tranfered. The Saniorium sat empty untill in 1992. In 2002 a lady bought the sanitorium and transformed it into an old country mall. It is currently not a mall anymore.
